Dogs and drinks and drag: Doggie Pride Fest to benefit canine rescue

End Pride month by celebrating with your beloved furry friend, for a cause. Doggie Pride Fest will be held at the Edison Country Club on the back patio on Sunday, June 30. The celebration will run from 3-7 p.m.

Doggie Pride Fest is being put on by the rescue group Doghouse Rescue Academy. Doghouse Rescue Academy is a 501(3) non-profit organization. They often organize fundraisers, events, and in-depth training sessions for our community and volunteers.

The rescue is entirely foster based, meaning that they don't have an actual shelter.

The group primarily rescues dogs from shelters in rural areas that lack resources including Clewiston Animal Control, Bowling Green Animal Control, Glades Animal Control, and Desoto Animal Control. These shelters are often at high capacity, and Doghouse Rescue Academy does what it can to limit the number of dogs in these shelters and save dogs from euthanasia due to overcrowding.

The entry fee for Doggie Pride Fest is a suggested $5 donation. The event will be hosted by local drag queen, Alyssa Lemay, and the tunes will be supplied by DJ Bigg John. There will be a raffle and a silent auction that will benefit the rescue. Adoptable dogs will be on site.

The main event is a doggie drag costume contest. Bring your (well behaved) pups and dress them in their most fabulous attire. A prize will be awarded to the winner of the contest.

"We at Doghouse Rescue Academy are so happy to see the community come together for a good time and a great cause," said Carey Van, the executive director of the rescue. "Both the Edison and the drag queen community have been so amazingly supportive. Every dollar raised helps us save more dogs from our rural shelter partners. They rely on rescues to help due to the challenges they are faced with, and we are grateful to be able to help."

The Edison Country Club is at 3583 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers.
