Health

The Center for Medicare reports that the United States out of pocket spending on health care reached $352.5 billion in 2016. The HealthCare.gov notes that the Marketplace plan is $7,350 for an individual and $14,700 for a family which of course doesn't include your monthly premiums or anything you spend for services your plan doesn't cover. Low health literacy is a real concern on both the personal and national level. The library health collection on the second floor serves to inspire you to embrace the wellness education that suits you best.

Would you be interested in providing an active role in yours or a loved one's medical care? Understanding the finer details of your condition may make it easier to evaluate and decide on important options regarding treatments. Communicating effectively with your doctors and medical professionals is an important key to health. Preventative self-care requires at least an introductory understanding of healthy living concepts. Knowledge is power and your Beach Library is here to provide you with information you seek.

Explore the health collection. There is a wide variety on integrated medicine, preventative, psychological aspects, and alternative health too. You will also find over fifty new health books on the libraries new book shelf. One reliable source is the 5th edition of the "Mayo Clinic Family Health Book" (Health Mayo) completely revised and updated for 2018.

Snack and treats

Are available this month in Beachcomber's Books on the third floor, each day 9:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and on Saturday from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Additional choices have been added.

The Friends

Notice the display in the foyer and the third floor sponsored by The Friends of the Library. If you're not yet a member, pick up an application to join. The quarterly newsletter lets you know what is happening and enables you to also appreciate more fully the many aspects that go into Library service. Applications are available at the display tables, at the first floor Staff Assistance Station, in the Bookstore or via email at beachfriends1@comcast.net

Set your calendar for the upcoming book sales too, with the nearest one taking place on November 17 and 18. Consider volunteering to help with the set-up, at the sale or the packing after the sale.

Clancy

Tom Clancy's works can be found in regular and large print, Mystery Fiction, He was working as a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history when his effort in writing, "The Hunt for Red October" found itself on the New York Times bestseller. He soon gained a reputation for being a master at blending exceptional realism, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. His death in 2013 noted a too short life but his works assure the classic thrillers will be enjoyed for many years. His works have inspired games such as the Ghost Recon, Rainbox Six and Aplinter Cell series. Since his death, his Jack Ryan series has been continued by his family estate through a series of authors.

If you like Clancy, consider also Larry Bond, Dale Brown, Stephen Coonts, Ken Follett, W.E.B. Griffin and Robert Lundlum.

Puzzles

Another puzzle was completed this week making it three puzzles in the past two weeks. We are delighted with the regulars who are looking forward to the puzzle table, as well as those who spend concentrated time on a given day. When we think a puzzle is too hard, someone comes along with their observant eye and soon the puzzle is moving forward. For those wanting to have added pleasure at home, pick up a puzzle at minimal cost in the Bookstore.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m and on Saturday between 9am and 1pm. We look forward to seeing you.
