The Home Depot Foundation presented the Melvin Cowart American Legion Post 274 with a grant of $10,100 for reconditioning of the building. The renovation of the local Fort Myers Beach Post by Team Depot is set to take place on Oct. 8-10.

The Home Depot Foundation was founded in 2011 and has helped more than 37,000 veterans on their homes or facilities. Home Depot associate volunteers form what is known as "Team Depot" to transform, remodel, and repair aging veterans' homes and posts.

Due to a recent vote made by the Melvin Cowart American Legion members, the post is transforming into a completely smoke free building. Thus far, the building's walls have been washed and air filters have been changed. Team Depot plans to improve on these renovations by repainting the lounge and office, installing LED lighting, and inserting cabinets and countertops for serving food.

The Melvin Cowart American Legion Post 274 has been a prime location for activities for veterans and their families since 1951. With a collection of the Women's Auxiliary members, Sons of The American Legion members and veterans, the Post is the seventh largest in the state of Florida.

"2019 happens to be the 100th Anniversary of The American Legion. What a gracious way for those in the Home Depot Foundation and Team Depot to acknowledge the United States veteran," said Dan Parker, Post Adjutant.
