Hooters of Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers and Cape Coral joined forces with the Harry Chapin Food Bank during the month of August to celebrate both of their 35th anniversaries.

Spokesperson Kristi Quarles said the Harry Chapin Food Bank came to them with the idea of celebrating their 35th anniversarys together.

"We have worked with them in the past. We put our heads together and decided that Hooters would donate 70 cents per lunch special (Monday through Friday), 35 cents for Hooters' anniversary and 35 cents for Harry Chapin Food Bank's anniversary," she said.

In addition, the South Florida Hooters Charity Fund also donated an additional 35 cents for every lunch special ordered at Hooters of Fort Myers Beach, Cape Coral and Fort Myers during August.

To kick off the event, on Aug. 1, local "Hooters girls" visited the Harry Chapin Food Bank to volunteer.

"About one and seven residents of Southwest Florida will experience hunger this year. We are very grateful to Hooters for their support and feeding local families in need," said Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, President and CEO Richard LeBer in a prepared statement.

During the month of August, $2,000 was raised, which was donated to the Harry Chapin Food Bank on Thursday, Sept. 20.

"The red tide did hinder Fort Myers Beach fundraising efforts because tourism was nonexistent during the month of August," Quarles said, adding that the fundraising efforts was good overall. "I envision we will work with Harry Chapin in the future."

The donation was made in tribute to Vince Miller, a Southwest Florida Hooters employee of just over five years, who passed away unexpectantly last month. Quarles said he had recently been promoted to assistant general manager at the Fort Myers Beach location.

"We thought it was a nice tribute for a wonderful employee and colleague," she said.

The Hooters of Fort Myers Beach will be working with the Harry Chapin Food Bank again on Saturday, Sept. 29, during Let's Feed Lee, which will take place at Publix, located at 4791 Estero Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"We will have Hooters girls volunteers at Estero Boulevard collecting items and taking them (patrons) shopping throughout the Publix," she said.

Participation in the Let's Feed Lee food drive is easy. Individuals simply have to go shopping at the Publix store, purchase one or more items from a shopping list handed out by volunteers, and then donate those items as they leave Publix to one of the volunteers.

To further celebrate Hooters 35th anniversary, also on Sept. 29, all 300,000 Hooters Girls alumni will be treated to a free meal for being ambassadors of good will, Quarles said. Those free meals will be at every Hooters in the nation.
