We stand for the flag

September 12, 2018
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

On Thursday, Sept. 6, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10097, Fort Myers Beach, held a membership meeting. One of the agenda items brought up for discussion and vote was whether or not to televise the NFL games this season.

Our membership consists of veterans, families of veterans, retired law enforcement and fire fighters (also veterans). The vote was a unanimous "NO." Like last year, we will not show any NFL games on our TVs. Sunday afternoon was always a big money-making day for our VFW, enabling our post to help support local veterans and families in need. All TVs were showing NFL games and our member fans packed the canteen to support their favorite team. As veterans, we cannot and will not tolerate the disrespect to our flag.

We still have a few World War II veterans left. We have Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans. All of them sacrificed in many ways. And, many are not with us today because they sacrificed everything, including their lives, to fight for this great country and our flag.

What some of these veterans, retired law enforcement and firefighters have seen and experienced, we cannot imagine - even in our wildest night mares. It is to honor them, that we gladly sacrifice what used to be a great enjoyment and fund raiser to us. As we view it, it's a small price to pay to show the love, honor and respect we VFW members have for OUR flag.
