Long-time water quality activist John Heim will face off with incumbent Cecil Pendergrass in the 2018 Lee County election.

Heim has filed to run as a write in for District 2. This district runs roughly between State Road 62 and Colonial Boulevard to the north; the county line to the east; Corkscrew Road, U.S. 41 and Gladiolus to the south; and the Caloosahatchee to the west. It does not include Fort Myers Beach, which is in District 4.

Heim is the co-founder of the SWFL Clean Water Movement, a local nonprofit that has lobbied for water quality issues locally and state wide. He was named as a "river champion" in 2014 by the Washington, D.C. -based American Rivers Association during its 40th anniversary celebration. He has also traveled to D.C.and Tallahassee to speak to legislators about water pollution in Florida.

In an email, Heim stated his slogan for the campaign trail will be "demonstrate to educate, as the campaign is for the people and by the people of Southwest Florida in Lee County."

The main staple of his platform will be tackling water quality issues, with what is affecting southwest Florida being his priority. Heim plans to raise awareness of his campaign through social media and has set up a campaign Facebook, John Heim for Lee County Commissioner.

While water quality will be Heim's top priority, he said he will be able to catch up with a learning curve to other county issues.

"I've lived here for 37 years, I've no qualms on understanding other issues," he said. "My main thing is clean water, but also what's wrong with Lee County as a whole."

Heim hopes, if elected, to take a closer look at the bed tax and make sure it is being distributed fairly.

"I want a better life for my daughter and everyone else in Lee County," he said.
