07.05.2017 Island Opportunities

July 5, 2017
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

When season is over, it's time for the locals to get out and enjoy the island's food and entertainment scene. It can be hard to get around during season, but once traffic lightens - even with construction - our islanders have lots of delicious or fun choices to make.

From now through September, the Observer will feature a restaurant, bar or business on Fort Myers Beach or San Carlos Island that our readers might like to get out and enjoy.

This week: Tuckaway Coffee Cafe

Tuckaway Coffee Cafe is located at 1740 Estero Boulevard.

A puff of steam fills the cafe, followed by the smell of a freshly heated bagel wafting through the air.

If you're looking for breakfast bites, Tuckaway Coffee Cafe offers up delicious and filling options., specializing in European-style waffles and bagel sandwiches.

What exactly is a European waffle? According to Kelly Sutherland, one of the cafe's employees, it's made with a dough, whereas American waffles are made with a batter. Tuckaway's waffles come out of the iron with the dough already sweetened, so she doesn't recommend drowning it in syrup. Instead, customers can pick from a variety of toppings, such as Nutella, bananas or homemade whip cream.

"The waffles are made fresh daily, and have to rise in the morning," Sutherland said.

Her favorite thing on the menu is the Rockin Robin sandwich: turkey, barbecue, red onion, provolone and tomato on a bagel. All the bagels are steamed.

Besides foods, the cafe offers Lavazza espresso, teas and coffee drinks - iced or hot - and smoothies. Make sure to try the locally-made mango jam.

Parking can be tricky, as the cafe only has three parking spaces, but it's worth a walk.

Tuckaway Cafe is located at 1740 Estero Boulevard and is open daily from 7 a.m.to 2 p.m.
