June 14, 2017
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The third annual Battle on the Blueway returned to Fort Myers Beach on June 10 but was ultimately canceled at 11 a.m. after two hours of lightning delays. Still, organizers call the event a huge success, having raised more for Special Olympic Florida Lee County SUP team than all other years combined.

Despite the adverse weather, nearly all registered racers signed in for the race. The Special Olympic Florida Lee County SUP team were excited and very appreciative for all the support. Even after the race was canceled, there was a positive vibe throughout the crowd.

"This is a beloved event for many people, including lots of Lee County Parks & Recreation staff. Many of us act as volunteers over the weekend to support the event. We are very proud of our long-standing partnership with the SWFL SUP club and Special Olympics Florida Lee County and our local paddling community.", said Mike Hammond, Blueway Coordinator for Lee County Parks & Recreation.

Prizes included two iSUPs, donated by Body Glove, a one-night stay at the Best Western Plus Beach Resort, two paddle boards from Estero River Outfitters, paddles from YOLO, and many more. All racers also received a bunch of goodies from generous sponsors in their Ron Jon swag bags.

In appreciation to the local SWFL racing community, the 2017 Battle on the Blueway organizers announced that all registrant will get a $10off coupon for next year's event.

The Battle on the Blueway is the result of a long-standing partnership between Lee County Parks & Recreation and the SWFL SUP Club to benefit Special Olympics Florida Lee County SUP team. The Battle on the Blueway includes competitive events for stand-up paddleboarders (SUPs) as well as kayaks, outrigger canoes and surf skis. It is a fun, family event with product demos, music, vendors, and more.
