Celebrating Memorial Day weekend on Fort Myers Beach

May 24, 2017
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Memorial Day is a time to reflect upon all those who have sacrificed their lives for the greater good of the country. Memorial Day weekend is always a special time to reflect and dedicate our gratitude to those soldiers, and Fort Myers Beach is the perfect place to relax, kick back and give thanks to those who've fought for us.

We thank all past, present and future military personnel for their dedication and their service, for keeping us safe and putting their lives on the line to protect their fellow citizens.

Bluegrass, Brew and BBQ benefit

Matanzas on the Bay, 414 Crescent St., is hosting its fourth annual Bluegrass, Brew and BBQ benefit fund-raiser, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 27, to benefit Operation Open Arms, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the care and treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in military personnel and veterans.

The event will feature live music from the Bugtussle Ramblers, from 1 to 4 p.m., and the Cooter Creek Bluegrass Band, from 5 to 8 p.m., each musical veterans of the benefit.

While enjoying the music, savor some specialty craft beer from Fort Myers Brewing Company, as well as a 50/50 raffle and $15 barbecue plates featuring ribs, smoked pork shanks, potato salad and corn on the cob, offered from noon until the food is gone.

Last year's Bluegrass, Brew and BBQ event raised more than $7,000 for Operation Open Arms, attracting more than 800 guests to support the cause.

This year, according to organizers, 50 percent of proceeds from the barbecue, 10 percent of all restaurant proceeds and 50 percent of the 50/50 raffle will benefit Operation Open Arms. The event will also feature a silent auction, with 100 percent of the auction proceeds supporting Operation Open Arms.

Free car parking and boat dockage will be available for guests traveling by land or sea, so come one, come all to this great and entertaining benefit.

For the past 12 years, Operation Open arms has continued to make a difference in the lives of more than 3,400 military personnel and veterans, facilitating more than $13.6 million in direct tangible benefits for U.S. troops returning from combat or foreign duty stations.

The 501(c)(3) charity, along with its many sponsorships and donating businesses, help give military personnel well-deserved vacations, weddings and getaways.

Operation Open Arms offers local businesses, associations, and individuals an opportunity to support our active duty troops. For more information about the organization and its cause, or to help however you can, visit OperationOpenArms.org.
